This breed is one of the most versatile horse I've had the pleasure to work with. It is primarily used to race under harness; but we have used them for barrel racing, trail riding, team driving, horse shows, in parades and as a buggy horse.

The Trottingbred Horse was developed in the early 1960's by crossing Welsh, Hackney, and Shetland Ponies with full Standardbred Horses. Most are now one-half to seven-eighths Standardbreds and are officially recognized as a breed of horse. To qualify for racing, Trottingbreds may not measure more than 51 1/2 inches (shod) at the top of the withers. They race one-half mile and are classified by times earned.
Trottingbred racing is a do-it-yourself, family oriented sport found in the USA, Canada, Bermuda, and Italy. It allows the amateur horseman to receive racing experience on the track. Tracks range in sizes. They have to be oval for times to be official. The object of a breeding program is to keep the height minimized and increase the speed. The record for pacers currently stands at 0:58.3 on a half mile track and 1:01 on a half mile track for trotters. The can be found racing every Friday and Saturday night from June to mid-September.
